TASTY in Greater Wellington
The 2009 Greater Wellington Festival at St. John's, Rockwood was a Tasty treat from beginning to end with physical treats symbolizing how tasty our new lives are in Christ.
Music was led by a youth trio of Laura Bender, Lisa Bender, and Erik Eastmure whose enthusiastic singing, action songs, and games were enjoyed by all. Finding hidden music shakers was rewarded with fruit-flavoured candies, and low energy time came with fruit-candy infusion. The trio led singing for the traditional end of day parade around Rockwood.
Sessions of "Messy Church" with extremely tasty piled high sweet tortillas, was led by Peter DeGroot who visited other sessions pretending to be just one of the youth, with reduced stature achieved through walking on his knees. As a result of Peter's efforts, nearby areas of earth are also going to be fed with little white pine trees that participants planted in pots and took home, a very appropriate end to Earth week.
In crafts, a metal container (our life) received laser hologram green liner (God's varied, deep, changing life), and was filled with cherry kabobs (abundant fruit). We decorated both real and styrofoam eggs (new life). Popcorn in its popped state is tastier than unpopped, just like our lives are better after God's Presence in being opened-up to His world; a picture with cross center, bright picture, frame made with both types of corn will remind us of this.
Susan Muldoon made a beautiful banner and felt pieces that participants signed their names on. We paraded behind the Group banner through Rockwood, singing and waving individual faith expression banners. A Church banner was replaced with our Festival one for the service. In keeping with our Tasty theme, Pauline Head told us the story of rock soup.
A special feature of this year's event was participation by youth from Avalon Children's Residence. Christyn Perkons' visit to bring Diocesan greetings was especially appreciated by the organizers.
